sure. buy a frame on ebay or roadbikereview. then be patient and get a cheap used ultegra gruppo on ebay. then get a cheap set of wheels on ebay. then get a cheap saddle and handlebars and fork on ebay.

if you are patient, you could build a bike that would run you $1500 new for less than $500.

i have a mountain bike i'de sell you for $500...you could ride it on the roads

Not the same, gearing is way different.

You can sometimes find some decent ones for under a 1000.

Hey Will, here's an old thread from when I was looking for a bike that has some really decent info. I ended up getting a Scott Speedster S50 from the Locomotion on Fairbanks right by Park Ave and Rollins College and I'm pretty happy with it. Think it cost a bit less than $700.

Another suggestion is checking out craigslist in major cities. There are many racing bikes in San Fran for less then 500 bucks so all you'd have to do is get it checked at a local bike shop and they can ship it to you in a box.

I bought my wife a new Lemond a couple of years ago with 105 on it for $650, nice aluminium frame, Bontrager wheels, etc... She still rides it and it's in great condition. Look around, there are all kinds of deals, but you may want to wait until mid january, prices will drop then....

I've got a '98 Klein Quantam Race I'd be willing to sell for $500 +shipping. It's a 58cm, with 9spd Ultegra (8spd double cranks and front deraileaur). It has a fresh drivetrain (chain/cassette), cables, housing, bar tape and new tires on Bontrager race lite wheels that came off of a Trek Madone 5.2sl (my new bike). I was keeping this to use as a back up, but it's contributing to the clutter (wife's term) in our house. Apparaently, two MT bikes and two road bikes is TOO many bikes.

I'm a bike shop mechanic so the bike is in good shape. If you're interested, or have more questions let me know. I'd be happy to supply pictures.

NO! You can't have too many bikes. :) This is a sweet deal if the size fits you. I have a '99 Klein Quantum Race.

I think it would be worth the money and time to go to a good, knowledgeable shop and get measured and fitted before buying anything. You are most likely to develop injuries from not being set up properly, and the discomfort may make you not enjoy it as much. Also, I fyou know your frame size, you will know where to look.

What kind of riding are you looking to do?

Do you do any cycling now?

What other sports do you do?

How often will you be riding?

Consider Jamis.

Also, consider a SOMA frame and parts if you can find a group cheap.

(I'm a fan of steel frames, but thats me)

I currently have a Kona "Smoke" and it's more of a city bike. It's a steel frame but it's only because an aluminum frame wouldn't be able to take years of bumps and abuse on city streets. If he's going into racing bikes, an aluminum frame would be fine but for an everyday rider, I'd suggest a steelie. I'm currently "modding" my bike to make it more of a racing/city bike.

Shop Ebay, it's dirt cheap right now, I just picked up some components for very little money. Everyone wants the new, glorious, shiny Shimano 10 speed for X-mas and people are dumping their 8 and 9 speed stuff like bad habits.

Getting fitted should be free, most bike shops are happy to help you make the right decision.

Jusr my $0.02 on steel frames: inspect it very closely. You can't beat steel for the old school feel, the comfort, etc... but it'll rust in no time. I lost a Fondriest frame to road salt b/c my team trained year round and I'm still kicking my self for not using frame saver when I should have.
