Ben H Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 HeyI need to get a polish that will shine up some dull spots on my black 850. The problem is every one i have tried so far only makes the paint dull - the polish works fins on sliver cars....just not my black one!!!(i was useing the turtle was white polishing compound)anyone have any ideas??Ben
IOPTURBO Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 a buffing compound? or a glaze? Meguiars professional new car glaze works well.\
Ben H Posted June 22, 2004 Author Report Posted June 22, 2004 No no, like an actual polish - to reomve the dunlness not just cover it upBen
850 Stylzz Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 Do you have a pic of the damage? Maybe your clearcoat has worn through? Almost any polish should bring back some semblance of luster.
freeskier8585 Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 id start with miguirs mild cut cleaner, then move to a heavy cut if that doesnt work, i use them, they always take the scratches out
Ben H Posted June 22, 2004 Author Report Posted June 22, 2004 I dont really know how to explane..If i use the polish i have on the black paint it dulls it....a coat of was hides it a bit....but its still thereThe fine cut cleaner is not a bad idea...just wanted to know something that is FORSURE safe for black cars befor i spend more money and have more dissapointmentBen
junibunie Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 I recently tried poorboy pro polish and swirl removers and worked great for my black car. I've also had good results with meguiar's dual action cleaner polish.

Roger Troue Posted June 24, 2004 Report Posted June 24, 2004 HeyI need to get a polish that will shine up some dull spots on my black 850. You may need to use a good cleaner or clay first but ZAINO works.I have heard a new product from McGuire's - new generation or 2nd generation works well also. They have a web site Zaino.com or Zainostore.com I believe. They are in PA.
550 Posted June 24, 2004 Report Posted June 24, 2004 Hey ben if you use white polish it will shine it up a bit better, but bring out some of the more ugly spot, use a black or darker polish it will hide some of it.
jrsmith70 Posted June 24, 2004 Report Posted June 24, 2004 If you are serious about restoring your paint read on....I too have a black Volvo (1998 S70 GLT) and I was considering repainting due to the swirls, scratches- some of which were pretty deep. After speaking to my local body shop heres what I did: Step 1 Wet sand with 1200 grit and soap water Step 2: Wash, dry and apply 3M Perfect-It III Rubbing Compound (#05933) with varable speed buffer at apx.2000 rpm. Use med to light pressure, as compound dries use very little pressure. Step 3: Wash, dry andapply 3M Perfect-It Foam Polishing Pad Glaze (#05996) Apply same way as the rubbing compund but run buffer at 2500 rpm. Step 4: Wash, dry andapply Meguiar's Gold Classic Clear Coat Liquid Car Wax. **It is absolutly importaint to use the recommended pads for the rubbing compound & polish for sucess!!!** This is a 6+ hour job and can not be rushed. Also, it is notfor the faint hearted as your car will look like a disaster aster you wet sand it but the result is a absolute deep glass-like finish and is well worth the investment, which buy the was is around 100.00 for the compound, polish, 2 pack of foam pads, 1 buffing cloth disk, 1 pkg. of 1200 wet sand paper and around 60.00 for a Chicago varioable speed polisher. Good Luck!
Ben H Posted June 24, 2004 Author Report Posted June 24, 2004 HeyThat would be great if i had a machine to do it......im just lookin for a less abrasive polish then the turtle wax ive been useing...im gonna try the meguires eventually...thanks for all the help!!Ben
850 Stylzz Posted June 24, 2004 Report Posted June 24, 2004 hey jr, fo you have any before and after pics?
freeskier8585 Posted June 24, 2004 Report Posted June 24, 2004 i used the MIG diaomnd cut w/ a buffer on my car this weekend then followed up with the #7 show car polish, looks good but i have to wet sand the deeper scratches, id use 2000 grit not 1200
jrsmith70 Posted June 24, 2004 Report Posted June 24, 2004 850, I didn't take any before shots. I now wish that I did. Before working the paint job I promissed myself I would never own another black car again, but I'm so satisfied with the results I would have no hesitation whatsoever.
