Replace Front Wheel Bearing Assembly

I am working on my 1998 V70 (60,000 miles) to replace a noisy right front wheel bearing assembly. I follow Rich's recently posted instructions to the letters, in addition to Haynes', but is now stuck with the axle not bulging after smacking it hard. What kind of hammer do you use and how do you prevent from damaging the axle? I assume factory used the Volvo metal adhesive to keep the splines and bearing assembly together; should I use heat or some other way to break this up?

Assuming that I will be succesful in breaking this loose, when you put it back together, do you need to use the Volvo metal adhesive or the Loctite 609 Retaining Compound as posted in brickboard?

Thanks.

When I changed mine, I bought the kit with the bolts/nuts.

I simply put the old axle nut on backwards a ways, and pounded on it with a 10lb hammer. Took a while, but it eventually came off.

How about a hub puller? You can borrow one from Autozone. It looks like to bolts to the hub with a few lugs and has a threaded rod that pushes against the axle.

I have a 16lb sledge, I use, I also use the liquid wrench soak it for a good while. I also have a tap and dye set that is large enough to touch up the threads if I need to. The hub puller is also a great Idea.

Go for the hub puller. Absolutely no risk of damaging the threads this way. It worked great for my '98 V70 T5. I bought mine at Schucks (I'm talking about the puller) for $35 but you can rent them for like $6 bucks.
