VOLVO S70 Posted July 24, 2005 Report Posted July 24, 2005 I'm up in the air in terms of which navigation/dvd system to buy for my ride. What do you guys recommend? I really like the double din units as those tend to look more stock, but just trying to get a feel as to what I should buy.
Bing_0 Posted July 24, 2005 Report Posted July 24, 2005 you will NOT be able to fit a double DIN headunit into our cars with out major hacking, and even if you did manage to do it, there would be almostno way to secure it... I said this from the beginning and a few members found out hte hardway....we have a eurodin dash, not a standarddouble din as for navi systems:avic-n1: if you can find the older unupdated n1, you can get it and the good thing about them is you can easily bypass the safety and it will allow you to modify the navi function while driving as well as watch dvd while driving. the latter is not so important as you shouldnt beg watching movies while you are driving, but the fact hat in the later avic n2 and updated avicn1s, all the navi button disappears once you go above 5 mph is annoying....say i wanted to change the distination on the high way...i am not going to pull over and stop each time...avic-n2: the good thing is that with the udpates, they fixed a lot of hte bugs with the avic-n1, and it has xm satelite live traffic.avic-d1: wont fit in our cars and does not play dvds...the pioneers would be my bed for best perfomrance for hte buck...alpine: really nice to use, but you will end up paying ALOT more than the pioneerskenwood: tried them briefly, seems to work aight, but again, a lot more than the pioneer option.Eclipse: decent, but when i used it, i didnt htink it was quite as user friendly or feature packed as the avic-n1so...basically when it comes down to it, my suggestion would be the avic n1 or the n2b
VOLVO S70 Posted July 25, 2005 Author Report Posted July 25, 2005 so the avic-n1 is the only one that can play a dvd when driving? and how do you know if it's been updated or not. i know were not supposed to be driving while watching the dvd, but it's not so much for me, but my passengers. i want a system that can play dvd's while driving down the road.
SH8KDWN Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 In order to use the Pioneer system NAV function don't you have to have the NAV CD in? This means that you cannot listen to a normal CD when trying to use NAV. That's what I was told when I wanted to buy one. Let me know if that's correct or not.
the underlørd Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 Marv, you do a lot of travelling? Get lost a lot? :)
Bing_0 Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 all the pioneers have memory navi function...meaning you need the dvd in the drive to have it program the trip, once it memorizes the trip, you can take the dvd out, and insert a cd, mp3, dvd what ever, and it will play fine, and it will still give you voice and graphic prompts for the navi function. they are hte ifrst to come out with this feature, very useful if you ask me the avic-n1 is not he only one that can be made to play a movie on its screen while driving, but its the cheapest one at a given performance level. the alpines for example, can be bypassed with the module, at least hte older generation can, but you have to buy first a in dash flipout for abou the same money as the avic, and then spend close to another 1k on the navi module...b
VOLVO S70 Posted July 25, 2005 Author Report Posted July 25, 2005 Marv, you do a lot of travelling? Get lost a lot? ←yes, i do alot of traveling. and sometimes i get lost. but it's more for the whole safety issue. i hate looking a thomas bros map book, while on the phone, and also on the road. it's a pain in the a$*, if you know what i'm saying.
steve s Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 i hate looking a thomas bros map book, while on the phone, and also on the road. it's a pain in the a$*, if you know what i'm saying.←dangerous too... soo... knee on the steering wheel i presume my old college roommate does that. kinda freaks me out.
x.data Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 I have the kenwood kvt 815dvd with the kna dv4100, and its awesome. very easy to bypass the security, just ground the parking brake wires out and it will let you watch movies while driving, and use the navigation as well. its really a great system and since the navi unit is seperate you just leave the dvd in there, and can do whatever you want with the dvd player in the head unit. the vioce guidance is awesome and prompts even if the display is closed and you are listening to radio, or open watching dvd.... anything. reroutes instantly if you get off the suggested route, and all the other features of most navi units. sure its a lil more expensive than some, but you really get what you pay for certain times, and this is one of them.some pics are posted here http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?s...opic=17404&st=0lemme know if you got and questions
