850 & S/V70 Sunroof Removal

From Bay 13

This post should help for adjusting the sunroof and removing the sunroof glass to get to the shade for repair. I use ¼ drive 25 torx bit to remove the screws that hold the glass in place. If you are repairing the shade cloth, a good spray on contact glue, the kind you spray on both sides and let dry then put the two together will be needed. A good 3M brand or equivalent will work.

Start with the sunroof in the tilted up position as shown in the picture. Both sides have the black plastic scissor like strips that hide the screws that hold the roof in place.

Grab the bottom part of the plastic trim and bow it inward just a bit, this will allow you to get it out of the track that it slides in.

Once the bottom strip is out of the sunroof track, close it up so it molds with the top strip. This is what it would look like with the sunroof down in the closed position. Now you can take the trim/strip off by pushing the whole strip to the rear of the car and it will disconnect from the sunroof. When you go to put the strips back in just do everything in reverse.

With the cover strips off you can see the torx screws that you are going to have to take out to be able to lift the sunroof glass out of the car. You will notice that there are three 25mm torx screws on each side. Take out the two forward most torx screws ONLY. That's the two most forward screws on each side for a total of 4. Once you have the screws out, notice how the tabs from the sunroof sit on the framing. Once the screws are out push up and back just a bit so the rear will clear the tab on the rail. I lay a blanket on the roof and just roll the glass over onto the blanket.

With the glass off the rails and out of the way, slide the sunroof shade all the way forward. You can see the shade is held in place by two clips on each side.

With a small pocket screw driver push back on the clip as shown and it will slide inboard just enough for the clip that slides in the track to come out, and by you lifting a bit on the shade will keep it out of the track. Lift the two front clips out of the track and then slide the roof forward just a bit and disconnect the two rear, and now the shade can be brought forward and out of the car. When you go back in clip the rear clips in the track slide it back and then put the front clips in. Set up an area to re-glue the shade, pull back all the loose cloth and generously spray glue on the cloth and the shade that it will be glued to. Use an assistant to hold the cloth up while the other with clean hands works the cloth onto the backing board.
Once you have the glass back on the rails and are ready to put the screws back in, put them in hand tight, and then lower the roof to the closed position. The front of the sunroof should be even with the roof of the car, so stand on the outside of the car and push up on the front until level with the front and tighten the front torx screw on one side then do the other. The rear of the sunroof should be about 2 mm higher than the front, this will help to keep down wind noise.
