P2 S60/V70 Headlight Lens
There are many reasons the need to remove the headlight lens may come
up. Most common would be a cracked lens or upgrading to new
lenses. Before you begin make sure you have a clean work area,
heat gun, flat-head screwdriver, razor blade, and solvent. A heat
gun is a must for this project. Without it you risk not only
damage to the headlight but also hours of your life gone forever.
Start by locating the four clips on the lens.
Highlight above and below are the clips you will need to remove.
I found the easiest way is to gently pry them up with a
screwdriver. Use caution as you are working with glass. I
strongly suggest you have safety glasses on throughout this project.
With the clips removed and set aside, start warming the glue with a
heat gun. A low setting will get the job done without risking
damage to the reflector of the headlight or the plastic housing.
Working with 3-4" sections, heat the glue and remove it. I
found the best tool for this is a small flat-head
screwdriver.
Use the screwdriver to dig out the glue. Simply cutting it is not enough as it will reset if not removed.
Do not force the lens apart at any point! These are sensitive plastic parts.
Once you have removed as much glue as you can, warm the top section of
the housing and try to pry the lens apart from the housing with the
screwdriver. If the lens is still secure stop! You have not
removed enough glue. When you have removed enough glue, you will
be able to pry away little section of the lens. With the lens
separated use the razor to cut any remaining glue.
If you are removing the bezel for any reason, it is held on by four clips. Two on the top and two on the bottom.
With the headlight apart it can be cleaned up with a little heat and a
screw driver. Any excess glue on the lens can be removed with a
solvent. I would leave any residue on the headlight itself alone.
With the headlight apart resist the urge to touch the chrome
reflectors. They are very delicate!! To reassemble the
headlight just add the new glue to the lens and press it back in place
on the headlight. Reinstall the clips to aid the glue. In
24-36 hours the headlight may be re-installed.
