Ohlins Strut Rebuild
Repair on Ohlins strut
Remove the old strut by removing the two bolts that connect it to the
steering knuckle. Let the knuckle drop out of the way. Then remove the
swaybar endlink(16mm socket and 17mm wrench). Now, remove the 3 13mm
bolts on the top of the strut tower and slowly work the strut out. You
will now need to place the strut a bench vise and compress the springs.
Once the spring is compressed, loosen the strut bearing retaining nut.
Volvo makes a special tool for this, but if you don't have it, a lagre
set of vise grips and a combination wrench will do. When the nut is
off, there is another retaining nut with 4 tabs, w/ the vise grib
holding the piston shaft, tap on the nut with a hammer till it
loosens(there is also a volvo tool for this). Remove the nut, then the
sturt bearing(ie strut mount) and slide the spring off.
Now, place the ohlin in the vise.....
and loosen the 17mm nut on the bottom of the strut(17mm box wrench and 5mm hex key).
With the nut and washer off, you can now pull the piston out of the shock housing.
Now
MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THE PISTON AND BUSHING CLEAN!!! THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.
Now
you can place the spring on the spring perch and slide the piston back
into the housing. Becareful, it's not hard but just make sure to take
your time.
When you get the piston back in, put the retaining nut back on the
bottom of the strut. Tighten to 50Nm or 37 lb. ft. Release spring
clamps and make sure the strut bearing seats properly.
Then slide the reservoir through the shock tower and align the bolts
with the holes on the tower. Push it up and throw a nut on one of the
screws so the shock is held in place. bolt the shock back up to the
steering knuckle and tighten to 52lb ft and then 90* on top of that.
tighten strut tower bolts to 18lb ft. and you are done. Go get an
alignment.
