Spring Bump Stop

Repairing the spring bump stop on the 850 and S/V/C70

The 850 and the S/V/C 70s have a rubber bump stop inside the rear spring. The rubber bump stop is held in place with a plastic clip that for some reason breaks and when that happens the bump stop will fall down. The bump stop is large enough that it can't get lost, it's stuck inside the spring. Looking at the problem, it appears that you would have to remove the spring to be able to secure the bump stop back in place. The repair shows you how to do the repair without removing the rear suspension spring.

The above tools are 3/8 drive. A six inch extension, a 12 inch extension, a swivel, a socket, and a 3/8 to 1/2 inch adapter. The repair pics that follow will show you how I use the tools to get around the removal of the rear spring.

The above picture is what the new replacement clip looks like. The old clip is black. I have tapped the pin down just a bit, if you look closely you can see that it has been pushed in and is just starting to push the clips out a bit. I pre-start the pin cause if you don't and try to tap it in once it's in place it will not start correctly and more than likely fall out. The part number for the clip is 9157631.

Above is a typical picture of what the bump stop looks like when the clip stops holding it in place. The white arrow is pointing to whats left of the clip. Take a screw driver and you can push the old clip out.

Once the old clip is out, I use a socket and an extension to push the new clip up into the hole.

Once you have pushed the new clip up into the bump stop it should look like the above picture.

If you look up inside the spring you will see where the new clip has to fasten to.

To secure the new clip in place use the extensions and swivels set up so you have something like the above picture. Work the bump stop up into place and then use the swivel set up to push or tap with a hammer and the clip will snap into the black plastic hole. Once the clip has fastened in the black hole the bump stop will stay in place. Now you have to tap the pin in so the clips will expand and really hold the bump stop in place. I use the 3/8 to 1/2 inch adapter to tap the pin into place so it is flush with the clip.

After I think I have the pin tapped in, I use an inspection mirror to look up in the hole to make sure I have tapped it in far enough, this may take a few tries before you actually get the pin in flush. Make sure it's in all the way or it will fall down later, and you are right back where you started.
